Based on 36 reviews. Based on reviews. Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis.

You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update. Parents need to know that Scratch is a web-based platform that allows kids to code their own games and animations using block-based programming. The site centers around the concept of sharing and collaboration, and users are encourage to comment on, as well as "remix," other users' content. User-generated content runs the gamut from educational and aspirational projects to first-person shooters with cartoon blood.

There are adult moderators using and monitoring the site, but there's no automated filtering. Kids will need to report any inappropriate content and comments they come across, and it can take some time to resolve a problem.

Parents of younger kids may wish to download the offline version of the tool instead of using the web-based version. Tutorials and guides will help motivated kids get started.

Scratch is a free, web-based application with an optional offline app that lets users combine graphics, photos, music, and sound to create interactive animations, games, and slideshows. Users create scripts by dragging and dropping graphical blocks that snap together like building blocks. They can then post their creations on the Scratch site, where others can view, download, and build upon them. There are tutorials and guides, often written in Scratch, to help get started.

This serves as a great introduction to coding logic, as well as a strong tool for self-expression, but there are still some safety concerns. Scratch stands out as an early entry in the coding-for-kids movement. This MIT brainchild has seen years of research and development and continues to have a loyal following in both classrooms and homes. Coding with blocks is widely accepted as an intuitive way for kids to start to understand some basic programming skills.

The concept of remixing, or building on others' work, comes with some challenges, but encourages kids to not only collaborate with each other, but learn from each other.

This open community model shines in many ways but does tend to leave kids open to mean behavior from other kids, as well as the occasional inappropriate bit of content. There is an offline version of the tool, which will be a better fit for younger kids and those whose family members can't keep as close an eye. For others, though, Scratch can be a platform to share ideas, learn, and connect, all while building crucial STE A M skills.

Families can talk about coding with Scratch. What does it mean and why is it important? What sorts of things use code?

Talk about collaboration on the platform. What does it mean to "remix" someone else's work? How do you feel about someone remixing what you've created?

Talk about being safe online. What are your family's rules about what can and cannot be shared? What should you do if you see something you know is not appropriate? User service is awful!!! Scratch had detected the word password through one of my sons comments which wasn't given as a personal password but as a group's password and it blocked him for 3 days. Later, they detected the same comment and banned that account for the same exact reason that they blocked it for previously. He hadn't shared any passwords or codes since and he got banned for doing nothing!! Screw scratch and everything to do with it.

Stay away from this if you can read!!! Helpful Report Report this review. My overall experience with Scratch is absolutely awful.

I used Scratch for several years and it started out okay. My overall experience learning code with it went pretty well. However, I believe some significant improvements could be made with their moderation.

The moderators so called "Scratch Team.. Even if the reasons aren't even against their "community guidelines. I cannot peacefully use this website without being in constant fear that my next ban is coming. In short, Scratch is not a good choice for children or students mainly because of their terrible moderation and lack of professionalism.

In case you're wondering, I have given up on Scratch entirely and do not plan to use it again. Add your rating. See all 36 parent reviews.
